Welcome to 1st Grade!
There are currently 5 first grade classrooms in the West Carroll Primary School which is located in Savanna, Illinois. The average class size is 18 students.
We use the Houghton Mifflin reading series (2005) as a base for all students. This is a phonetic based literature program that offers a wide variety of genre for the students. We have Reading Recovery for students who need a boost. The teachers have developed a Reader’s Club for children who come to first grade already reading. We held a First Grade Reading Night to promote reading and writing through the summer and to help parents better understand their role in helping their child learn to read.
We use the Everyday Math program. This series is a spiral program that offers frequent review and further development of math skills. It has a nightly home link that allows parents to keep current on the child’s math skills.
We have planned many educational and fun field trips. These have included trips to our local Palisades Park for a first grade fall festival, to Davenport’s Putnam Museum and IMAX Theater, the Dubuque River Museum, the Upper Mississippi River’s National Fish and Wildlife Service: Ingersoll Wetlands Center, and Timberlake Playhouse.
Our school will hold a science fair in May and we are encouraging our first grade students to participate in this.
