Where Children’s Possibilities Soar
West Carroll Primary School is the West Carroll District’s preschool through third grade building, which means that we establish the foundation for learning for the children of our communities.
Reading , Math, English, and Writing skills are our main focus. It is our goal to build in all children the skills necessary to be effective learners all the way through school and throughout their lives. We hold high expectations for ourselves as teachers and for the children as learners.
In addition to the 3 R’s, our students receive instruction in Science and Social Studies; and are enriched by high quality programs in Art, Music, and Physical Education.
A Safe and Secure Environment
At WCPS we take great pride in our close attention to detail when it comes to the safety of our students. Volunteers must go through volunteer training including background checks. Doors are locked at all times and visitors must report to the office upon arrival.
Educational Celebrations
It is well known that a robust vocabulary makes a profound difference in reading proficiency and school achievement. We enrich the word power of our students with our fall “Wear a Word Day” celebration. We also celebrate writing all year long through a summer writing project and an author visit at the beginning and end of the school year. Day of Reading, 100 th Day, and a multicultural festival are just a few more ways we make learning fun at WCPS.
Student Success
Our goal at WCPS is to help every student achieve more than they ever dreamed possible. Monthly character education awards are given out as a part of our Character Counts Program. WCPS celebrates student success in the Accelerated Reader program. We also recognize students with perfect attendance.
Technology
West Carroll Primary School prepares students for a technology driven world. We have SMART boards in many of our classrooms and a computer lab available for whole class activities. Students also participate in the Accelerated Reader computerized program that measures progress and encourages reading.
Community Involvement
At WCPS we recognize the importance of parent and community involvement in educating our youth. We work together with the local PTO, Education Foundation, and Rotary Club to provide resources for our students. Our new playground equipment was made possible through the support of the entire community. This endeavor won the Governor’s Hometown Award. Volunteers are the backbone of our learning environment, helping with centers and working one-on-one with students, reinforcing classroom curriculum.
Professional Learning Communities
The students at West Carroll Primary School benefit from the outstanding professional learning community within our school. Teachers work together to enhance the quality of education through literacy coaching, grant writing, book clubs, and after school workshops put on by teachers. Several of our teachers go on to share these ideas by publishing articles, teaching classes for teachers, and presenting at state conferences.
